His Story
Frankie Lee Smiley was a son of Liberty County and a combat engineer with the 1st Marine Division — among the Marines who cleared roads, bridged rivers, and braved mines so that others could advance. He was killed in action in Vietnam on August 25, 1968, at the age of 24. He came home to Liberty County for the last time and rests today at Cay Cemetery in Midway, near where he was born.
